The party is coming up, and…
All you can think about is who will be there and what you should say.
Will I be able to read the room?
What if they ask me something personal?
What if I say something stupid?
Will I be able to keep up my jokey banter the whole night?
**Self-Consciousness and Low Self-Esteem are Common**
If you suffer from low self-esteem or chronic self-consciousness…
You’re certainly not alone. In my experience, these are among the most common forms of mental torture.
The degree to which self-consciousness and low self-esteem hold us back from our potential cannot be overstated.
Imagine what you could do if there weren’t a voice inside saying you can’t!
Those of us who experience low self-esteem know in some deep hidden way that our inner critic isn’t telling the whole truth. Yet we live our day-to-day lives like it is.
These things come from “a good place.”
Low self-esteem and high self-consciousness are nearly always the remnants of important coping mechanisms that helped us endure a trying time.
This is significant in the present because it can feel dangerous to challenge those parts of ourselves.
That’s why it’s so hard to drop your self-criticism and just “believe in yourself”… because part of you still feels like believing in your worth will lead to something awful.
Therapy or coaching can help.
My approach to self-consciousness and low self-esteem may look something like this…
To begin, we’ll detail how self-consciousness and low self-esteem appear in your life. This will empower you to recognize them when they arise – even to expect them.
At the same time, we’ll seek an understanding of what’s driving these painful experiences. Maybe their roots are in early childhood, society at large, a traumatic experience, or a combination of these things. Whatever the case, an understanding of the roots will open a space for mercy and compassion to get in.
Then, armed with our new understanding of where self-consciousness and low self-esteem originate, we won’t try to obliterate them with logic or combat them with positive mantras (though these can be helpful sometimes!). Instead, we’ll develop a new relationship with the thoughts and feelings.
When we’re done…
.self-critical or self-conscious thoughts and feelings may arise, but you’ll no longer believe them.
You’ll know how to let the thoughts go… as though they were annoying Facebook notifications.
Simultaneously, you’ll believe deeply in your inherent worth, and because you’re no longer looking for others to evaluate your value, you won’t have a need for self-consciousness.
In the end, you’ll realize you’re naturally going about achieving your goals simply because you’ve discovered what was there the whole time: your worthy authentic being.
